The New York Times reports that “Saturday Night Live” and Fred Armisen are taking a lot of heat for a skit that ran this past weekend in which New York governor David A. Paterson, was portrayed as “disoriented and buffoonlike.” Paterson is legally blind.
The governor’s communications director, Risa B. Heller, said on Sunday that the skit amounted to nothing more than cheap ridicule. “The governor engages in humor all the time, and he can certainly take a joke,†she said in a statement. “However, this particular ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit unfortunately chose to ridicule people with physical disabilities and imply that disabled people are incapable of having jobs with serious responsibilities.”
